Sectional Landscape

$600.00

Oil on Canvas, 12” x 36” x 1.5”, 2024

Sectional Landscape explores the geological structure and visual rhythm of the Yellowstone region through an abstracted cross-section of land and color. Inspired by the layered formation of the caldera and surrounding terrain, the painting reimagines the landscape as a sequence of intersecting planes—each representing depth, movement, and geological time.

Using a carefully balanced palette, the composition contrasts cooler, atmospheric hues in the upper register with warmer, more saturated tones below, echoing the natural progression from sky to subsurface. The layered bands of color function both as geological strata and as an exploration of color theory, where complementary hues interact to create vibrancy, tension, and visual depth.

This work reflects an investigation into how landscape can be understood through abstraction—where place is interpreted not through representation, but through rhythm, structure, and the embodied experience of land over time.
